Jacinta Ruru (Ngati Raukawa ki Waikato, Ngai te
Rangi, Pakeha) B.A. (Well), L.L.M. (Otago), senior
law lecturer and coordinator of the Research Cluster
for Natural Resources (www.otago.ac.nz/law/nrl),
University of Otago.
Jacinta’s
research interests focus on exploring the legal
rights and responsibilities of Indigenous Peoples
to own and manage land and water. She is currently
co-leading a FRST funded Landcare Research project
Old Problems, New Solutions on the governance
of freshwater.
Jacinta has received several research distinctions,
most notably an University of Otago Early Career
Award for Distinction, a Fulbright Travel Award
and the inaugural Maori Academic Excellence Award
for Law.

Basil Sharp
Auckland University
Basil’s interest in water resource management
began in the mid-1970s with the economic assessment
of large scale irrigation projects in mid-Canterbury.
The 1980s saw him chairing the water resource
group leading up to the RMA.
Basil is particularly interested in the design,
application and performance of rights-based water
resource management.
